Not much knitting and no picture

It seems that baby M is in a new phase. He liked playing on a play mat for awhile, and I actually thought it would only get easier… but of course not. Now he knows who his mother is and won’t let me go anywhere without him. His “floor sensor” is pretty sensitive these days. Its alarm goes off when he approaches 20 inches from the floor even when he’s asleep. So much for the play mat.

While working on trying to put M down anywhere, I managed to complete the Habu scarf kit last month. Or rather, I had to finish it, but it is done nonetheless. The reason was I ran out of stainless steel yarn (they have silk wrapped stainless steel yarn) unexpectedly. The gauge was wildly off, so it was my fault. It was a kind of relief though, because I really didn’t like knitting the yarn. It wasn’t that bad when knitted together with merino yarn, but by itself with #3 needles? Not fun. That being said, I want to knit it again in another color… if I have a knitting machine. I think the texture is great and I’d love to have a few scarves like this.

The herringbone pattern gloves are on hold. There are only three fingers to go… but right now I want to relax when I can knit. Sorry Mom!

So, I started a very easy small baby blanket (not for M). However, it turned out that, even though it has only knit and purl stitches, if I have to look at the chart it can be problematic. There are too many interruptions right now. Who knew choosing a knitting project could be such a serious business? I have to think hard about the potential problems of a project and evaluate my skill.

So far I have found that lace is to be avoided (too much mess-up potential). Also, no color works (not good at it), no irregular increasing/decreasing (too much re-counting potential), no manipulation on the wrong side (need some mindless knitting part), and repeating/predictable patterns are the way to go. These pretty much only allow simple-shape scarves or shawl-type things, but I guess I still can experiment on stitch patterns.
